Lane Filtering in WA

MOTORCYCLE LANE FILTERING REGULATION March 29

MRA has been the driving force in lobbying for legal ‘lane filtering’ here in WA since 2011.

After many years of sometimes frustrating lobbying, going back to our initial meeting on this issue in 2011 when Troy Buswell was the Minister for Transport, we have finally received news on this issue.

Lane filtering was discussed at the meeting we had with the Road Safety Commission in January 2021, in regards to an education campaign leading up the official launch of lane filtering in WA on 29th March 2021. We have also received a letter from the Minister for Police and Road Safety informing us that the legislation has been drafted.

We have carried out research into the wording of the legislation and this is what the legislation states –

The maximum speed a motorcycle is allowed to travel at when lane filtering is 30 km/hr.

The penalty for noncompliance is $100.00 fine and the 2 demerit points.

Learner riders cannot lane filter.

Only two wheel motorcycle can lane filter not sidecars or trikes (pretty obvious)

Not allowed at school or pedestrian crossings, or in a school zone.

Not allowed between a heavy vehicle.

If it is not safe to do so safely.

The surprise is it is not allowed on our freeways.

We have contacted the Road Safety Commission asking to the reasons behind this and have received a reply that it is not seen as safe. We will continue to argue this point and hope that we can get this section altered in the future, I for one don’t want to be forced to sit on a stationary motorbike on the freeway when it is 40 degrees Celsius and I am wearing all my safety gear. I believe this would be far more dangerous than lane filtering at 30km/hr.

These changes have been published in the Government Gazette(regulation 130A and 130B) and will become law on 29th March 2021

====================================

LANE FILTERING REGULATION UPDATE:

The President Jeff Thomas and Safety Officer Dave Wright from the Motorcycle Riders Association of WA held a productive meeting on Monday 8th January 2021 with the Road Safety Commissioner, Adrian Warner and Assistant Commissioner Paul Zanetti from the WA Police Force who has responsibility for the State Traffic Branch of Police, this followed a request for the meeting from the MRAWA and emails from many concerned motorcycle riders, regarding the proposed legislation changes to lane filtering in WA freeways.

The Minister for Road Safety is sympathetic to the concerns we have raised on behalf of motorcycle riders regarding the restriction on lane filtering on freeways but given the upcoming general election, the Government is required to assume a ‘caretaker’ role, which limits the actions and decisions a government can take in this period. The Minister has asked the Road Safety Commission to prepare further options for consideration after the election result is clear and a new government has been formed.

As a next step we are meeting with representatives from the Road Safety Commission and WA Police to discuss the new regulations in more detail, with a view to identifying the specific changes that we want presented to the Minister for Road Safety for consideration as soon as possible after the election.”

Motorcycle Riders Association of WA Inc.

Jeff Thomas President

Dave Wright Safety Officer

Temporary Suspension of organised social events

Dear Members,

As you must all know by now the Corona virus (COVID-19) presents a very real risk to our community. The government guidelines to reduce the spread and slow down the progress of the virus are evolving and updating daily. Who could have imagined how rapidly and dramatically this would impact daily life in Australia and worldwide?

As our government moves to slow the pace of the virus down to try and prevent it overwhelming our health system, the committee of the BMWMCCWA has considered the rapidly escalating situation and decided that in the interests of its members, we should also make sensible changes to our approach to club activities, until such time as the threat has passed or our health system has developed the resources to successfully counter it.

Therefore, from 18 March 2020 all club events and organised social gatherings will be suspended until further notice. Web services including the Facebook Group and Forum will continue as normal. Members can still meet and ride as they wish, but they should consider their friends and families and take sensible precautions.

This includes:

Practising sensible social distancing, “no handshakes”

Wash your hands regularly and avoid touching your face

Self-isolate if you suspect you have the virus or may have been exposed to the virus until such time as you have confirmed that you are clear.

If you are exhibiting flu like symptoms such as coughing or sneezing avoid socialising until the symptoms have passed.

For many of us the virus may not be life threatening or even severe, however for a significant number of our members by nature of their age or health or that of their immediate family the virus presents a significant threat. For this reason, we hope you understand and support these measures. Your committee will monitor the situation and revise and provide regular updates to you as circumstances change.

Kind regards

Catalano's Staff Christmas Donation

Thanks to all of you who donated to the Catalano's staff Christmas collection online and on Sunday the 22nd of December. With your generous help we raised just over $500 for Lulu and the girls. They were delighted and I think very deserving given the lengths they go to looking after our Sunday morning gatherings. As promised all donors had their names entered in the Christmas card. Well done all!

BMW Safari - WA

Registration opens on the 20th June 2017

The BMW Safari event began in 1994 and this is its first ever visit to WA.

Designed to cater specifically for riders of BMW Motorcycles. It is unique to Australia. There are two different flavours - the TS Safari for road touring and the GS Safari for off-road adventure riding.

BMW Safaris are a place where riders can escape the daily grind, enjoy the freedom of traveling by bike and make life a ride with a great support network. The Safari typically runs as a touring style event for 5 days staying in a different location each night. The kilometres covered each day varies between about 200 – 500 kilometres so riding time could be up to 8 – 9 hours on some days. It is not a guided tour but the route is pre-ridden in the lead up to the event and full route maps and GPS tracks are created. We also send a lead rider out early in the morning to additionally mark the route with some arrows and also check road conditions in case of any major hazards en-route.

Each rider is free to follow this route at their own pace and stop as they please throughout the day. The only exception to this is where we will sometimes have alternate hard routes planned for riders who want to challenge themselves a little more. In this case we will have a lead and tail rider who guide riders over more difficult terrain. Help will be at hand to ensure everyone gets through safely as a group. In addition to this we have a sweep vehicle bringing up the rear with a trailer to carry any bikes that need to be picked up.

For GS Safaris, a luggage truck is also part of the convoy and will cart your luggage to each overnight stop so your bike is not weighed down with all your clothes.

One of the great things about BMW Safari is that it brings such a wide mix of people together. While the focus is on riding a lot of the time the adventure is about the places you go and the people you meet. Socialising is a big part of BMW Safari life. At night riders are treated to a mix of accommodation, entertainment and food. BMW Safari is an opportunity to meet like minded people and create life-long memories. The Safari concludes with a farewell dinner where everyone has a chance to tell stories about the week’s adventures and perhaps make plans for the next ride with your new found riding buddies. BMW Safari is an outlet for BMW riders that others envy. The riding is first class and the routes are remote. Be a part of the GS community and join us for an adventure of a lifetime.
2017 GS / TS SAFARI
In 22 years of BMW Safari we have never been to WA, but we’re changing that. In 2017 we’ll run the GS and TS Safari in tandem - the same way the original BMW Safaris used to run - with TS riders on the road and GS riders taking the dirt. Nightly stop overs will be the same so everyone can share the amazing BMW Safari spirit.
Pricing and more information will be announced soon.
Bookings open Tuesday June 20.

BMW SAFARI GS TOURS (2-4 day events, maximum 50 riders)
Many GS Safari customers want more BMW Safari events, so we will be running more Safaris in between the major GS Safari and GS Safari Enduro events. If you have been on a BMW Safari before you can bring a mate on another brand of bike.

FINKE / SIMPSON CROSSING (EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST REQUESTED)
We have been thinking about this ride for over a year and June 2017 could see it come to fruition. If you are keen to watch the iconic Finke Desert Race then cross the Simpson Desert, this ride would tick the boxes. This ride will be strictly limited, riders will need to be fit and experienced in sand riding.
Pricing and more information will be announced soon.
RAC Member? vote for a MC rep on the RACWA council

The following letter is published on behalf of Dave Wright, President of the Motorcycle Riders Association of Western Australia Inc.

"Motorcycle representation on RAC Council Election - 2016

Hi All (especially the RAC members among you)

I have nominated once again for a position on the Royal Automobile Club of Western Australia Council (RACWA).

I firmly believe that I can contribute positively to the growth of the RACWA in the areas that I have worked with that organisation over many years - to improve the safety of the most vulnerable road users in our community namely pedestrians, cyclists and particularly motorcycle and scooter riders.

I remain committed to actively assisting and supporting all riders and pedestrians. I have accumulated many years’ knowledge and experience and will continue to work for rider safety and sensible, practical legislation and to improve roads and roadsides for all vulnerable road users. Those amongst you who know me personally can testify to that however, I NEED your support to achieve this.

There are currently 15 sitting councillors on the RACWA Council. This election, there are 7 candidates standing for the 4 available positions.

You can vote for 1 only or up to four candidates and I would sincerely appreciate your support by placing an 'X' alongside my name (not a tick). As 4 incumbent RAC councillors are re-nominating, my best chance of success is for my supporters to vote for me only.

RACWA members will be receiving their copy of the RACWA Horizons Magazine very soon in which the RACWA Council Voting Ballot Form will be included.

Voting is for RAC members only and can only be done by using the form in the Horizons Magazine, so please do not throw your magazine out until you have voted.

The RAC is a very Influential organisation that can do a lot more for us and with your support I will work to that end.

Again, I would sincerely appreciate your support and sharing your personal recommendation to your friends, family & neighbours.

David Wright

President

Motorcycle Riders Association of Western Australia Inc.

Ulysses Club National Road Safety Committee (WA representative)

WA Motorcycle Safety Advisory Group member.

WA Vulnerable Road User Group member

BMW TPMS / RDC

TPMS - Tyre Pressure Monitoring System

Installed on many BMW bikes from mid 2000's

RDC / TPMS provides the rider with information on the current tyre pressure. The data is supplied by radio sensors in the Schraeder tubeless valves fitted to the wheels. These sensors are powered by a lithium CR2032 battery with a life span of around 5-7 years. When the batteries start to fail the TPMS will take longer to come on and show a reading. This is a tell tale sign your batteries are on the way out. If one fails change both as the other can't be far behind.

My R1200GSA is a 2009 model, 7 years and my sensors recently stopped working. This leave you with the annoying yellow triangle which you cannot get rid of until the sensor problem is fixed. It comes as a shock to learn that new sensors cost around $200 AUD and having a pair fitted is likely to cost in the region of $600. So can you do it for less?

I embarked on the journey of trying to do just this and after many set backs and a lot of learning I have succeeded. So I wanted to share the learning with you and let you know that you can remedy this annoying problem for the princely sum of $13 AUD per pair and a bit of your time and effort. Oh you also need access to at least one, possibly two neat tools that the club should be able to facilitate. these being the GS-911 can bus interface and the Ateq VT15 TPMS reset device.

First a couple of myths dispelled.

- the sensors switch off automatically when the bike has been stationery for more than around 15 minutes. This conserves battery life. They cannot be turned on by waving a magnet around them. They are re activated when the bike is moving and when rpm passes around 20-30km/h.

- sensors can be tested outside the tyre / before fitting. They do not require pressure to be activated. This is where the Ateq VT15 wake up tool comes in to play. It produces the correct radio frequency to waker the sensor which will then transmit to your on board dash IF it has previously been paired to your bike.

- your on board computer will not register a TPMS sensor that has not been paired (introduced) to the onboard computer. To make this introduction you need a GS-911

So my sensors failed and rather than fork out for new ones I tried buying some of the $20 units offered up on eBay from you guessed it China. Well suspecting some might not work and thinking that if they all did I could sell the extras I bought 4. they arrived about a month later $80 AUD delivered.

These sensors appear to be the genuine Schraeder OEM ones, albeit I suspect they are old stock or second hand units. I also found all 4 had flat batteries despite the guarantees offered on the vendors advertisement. Have you ever wondered why delivery from China takes so long? I suspect it takes just long enough for your window of time to lodge negative feedback on eBay to expire!.

So this prompted me to try and replace the batteries in the sensors. Which turned out to be surprisingly easy.

First remove the silicon/rubber coating over the battery compartment. I used the can opener on my leatherman, no kidding it worked perfectly.

Then remove the CR2032 battery using the tip of your pocket knife or a flat blade screwdriver to break the toy spot weld holding the tabs to the battery. There is one on top, visible, and another underneath that you only see if you pry the battery up on one side.

Next buy replacement CR2032 batteries WITH solder tabs, available for $2.45 from Jaycar.

Fit the battery by inserting the sensor tabs between the battery solder tabs and battery body. Then use a small clamp to hold the battery down in position and use some epoxy from the local hardware store to set the battery in position. alternatively you can simply cover the battery with a non conductive strip of plastic or similar and hold in place with fine zip ties (Pete's method - proven successful).

Now if you have replaced the batteries in your existing sensors you only need to refit them and clear the TPMS fault codes in your on board PC using the GS-911. If however like me you are fitting newly reconditioned or different sensors you will first need to pair them to your on board computer. To do this you need the GS-911 and the TPMS wake up tool the Ateq VT15.

First connect the GS-911 to your bike and clear the existing TPM fault codes. Next place the TPMS system into learning mode (using GS-911) and then activate the new sensors using the Ateq VT15 (in or out of the tyre) I did this outside the tyre to be sure all was ok before fitting the sensor in the tyre. The next picture shows me testing this before epoxying the battery in place. I then tested it again before fitting to the tyre to be sure.

Pairing takes a couple of minutes and then up come the pressure readings. on your dashboard.

Price for replacing my sensor 2,45 for the battery $8 for a tube of 2 pack epoxy (clear). Plus some effort to remove the tyre and fit the new sensor. I have not needed to fit the second sensor yet as mysteriously when the rear was fixed the front decided to come back to life, so I will wait and change it when I have to replace the tyre in a month or two.

The process really was quite easy and very satisfying once the correct steps were determined and the right tools were available.

Jigme's family are well known in the Himalayas; there have even been books written on them. His sister Khandro Thrinlay Chodon Rinpoche is an internationally respected Buddhist meditation teacher who has led many tours to the Himalayas and sponsors many humanitarian projects there through her charitable foundation, Khachodling. His older brother Jampal runs an established adventure tours company in India, which has catered to the special needs and requirements of guests for 20 years. Both have assisted Jigme in making the 'Open Heart Open Road' dream a reality."

Jigme will present on his life experiences riding bikes in the Himalayas and his upcoming tour at the BMW GM at the Vic Park Hotel Monday May 11, 2015

Show us your best photo!

On the home page of our website we have a picture slideshow, its time to update the content and you are invited to send in your best BMW bike related photo for consideration for the website slideshow.

Just to make it interesting we will judge all entrants to the best photo competition and award the best submission a prize at the Christmas in July Dinner. The judges will be your fellow club members. The committee will select the best submissions and these will be added to the slide show, these pictures will also be posted in their own Gallery on the website and members invited to vote for their favorite.

Basic guidelines include:

1. You or someone you know must have taken the photo, you must have permission to use it. i.e. no copyright infringement

2. It must include a connection to BMW Motorcycles somehow. Either a photo of the bike, the rider, or something that will tie in with the website theme. i.e. not a scenic photo with no bike, no rider and no motorcycle related content

3. Quantity - you can submit only 1 picture. So it has to be your favorite/best

4.Size - lets try and keep these photo's manageable. Its great that you have a camera that can take high definition 10MB+ photo's but that's way too big for website use. So please keep them no larger than 2 MB. if you don't know how to shrink it, ask someone. Don't email in massive photo's. Preferred format is JPEG

5. Entry - send your picture to president@bmwmccwa.asn.au title your email - "BMW Photo Competition"
Get your entry in by 30 June 2015, and make sure you put your name in the email so we know who you are?

Motorcycle using dedicated bus lane trial

Motorcycle using dedicated bus lane trial

As you have no doubt heard we recently had the announcement from our Minister for Transport Hon. Dean Nalder that we have finally got the start date for the 12 month trial of motorcycles to share dedicated bus lanes on Beaufort Street between Roe Street in Northbridge in Inglewood and on South Street between Vahland Avenue and the Freeway commencing from March 2nd 2015. The trial will last 12 months and will be monitored and evaluated against a range of safety and bus on-time-running criteria.

It is intended that the trial will allow the Government to make an informed decision about the longer term access to bus lanes by motorcyclists.

This has been almost 3 years to get to this point since our initial meeting with Troy Buswell. We have been asked to be part of the communication plan leading up to the launch and this notice is to advising all motorcycle and scooter riders that our behavior will be monitored by the police, Main Roads Dept. and Dept. of Transport. It is also important to be aware that cars will be turning left from these lanes and we need to be aware that some of them are a bit stupid. We will also be letting car drivers know that they will now need to look in the bus lane for much small vehicles. As for stopped buses I am sure we can pass a 2.4 meter bus in a 3.6 meter lane without too much bother or change into the next lane to pass. So if the trial is a success we will be pushing for all bus lanes to be made available to us but we don’t want to lose this opportunity because of bad behavior by a few riders.

Dave Wright

President

Motor Cycle Tours

The club receives a number of emails and details for motorcycle tours, most operating in Europe, Asia and Africa.

As an increasing number of members are embarking on overseas trips a new page has been added to our website to list some of the better looking tour operations and provide a link to their websites.

If members provide feedback via the members forum on tours they have completed then relevant comments can be recorded against the tours listed which may be of help to others considering a tour in the future.

If you have a tour you would like to recommend, organise or comment on then post your comments in the members forum or email the president to have the details added to the new web page.

See Motorcycle Tours

2014 Border Run

The Border Run is coming up this weekend Saturday the 2nd of August at Border Village just the other side of the WA border with SA.

This is a well attended though pretty informal rally of sorts that has been running since 1974 when it was initiated by some founding members of the BMW Motorcycle club of WA. Tradition has it that members of the WA and SA BMW Motorcycle clubs meet at Border Village for beverage or 2 on ths first Saturday evening in August. Since initiation attendance has grown to include riders from other clubs and other riders who just hear about it or get invited along. Even the Far Riders have added this to their calendar, though why anyone would ride across the country stopping at the venue only for fuel and a photo before turning around and heading home is beyond me? Having gone all that way you think they would stay for the evenings celebrations? well I suppose that's not their thing.

This year some of our long term members will be celebrating their 60th at the border, "Die Alt Border Fahrts?" someone one with better German can correct that for me ;-) (Nb. German for Ride = Fahrt)

If you are riding down for the meet, it is usual for riders to leave on the Thursday or Friday. Some take the black top via Coolgardie while others (if the road is open and is not wet (read Slippery!) take the unsealed Hyden Norseman road to cut the corner. Many WA riders aim to camp Friday night just after Balladonia and before the 90 Mile straight. There is a rest bay area to left of the road and a camp site is set up a short distance off the bitumen. It's good point to stop before the final run to the border on Saturday morning. Just remember the wildlife favors this stretch of road from early evening on, so be careful if you plan to arrive there late.

Those wanting to ride out from Perth in the company of others I suggest you get onto the clubs public forum and start organizing. Perhaps I'll see you out there!

Wayne Eacott

Sadly one of our number Wayne Eacott, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday 10th of May. Wayne had been a member of many years and some will remember him from the first Desert Raid run to Carnegie which he attempted on his Red R1100GS.

Or later at the Vintage Stomp, Voyager Estate after he completed and exhibited a stunning restoration of a red and white R100GS PD. Most recently with some assistance from Dave Munro he had just completed his latest project a R80G/S PD which had been a few years in the process and of which he was rightly very proud.
Our condolences have been conveyed to his wife Sharon. While we only saw Wayne occasionally, his energy, enthusiasm, good nature and friendship will be missed.
Motorcycle Safety

As you are all most likely aware the last few months have seen an alarming toll of motorcycle related accidents some fatal. More than ever it is essential that you watch out on our roads. While many of these accidents have been attributable to rider error there is still the ever increasing threat of distracted drivers due in no small part to their preoccupation with mobile devices. While making yourself more visible is a good thing you cannot rely on this alone to prevent a distracted or intoxicated driver causing you harm. Take care to manage your riding space and separate your self from those who exhibit the tell tale signs of haste and distraction.

On a related subject Dave Wright has sent us the February Road Safety Report which contains some informative information on the legality or illegality of lane splitting in WA

You can read the full article in the Newsletters section, here is an extract:

"I have covered this issue before but I am still asked if lane splitting and filtering is permitted in WA. One of the issues raised during discussions with the Minister for Transport was allowing motorcycle lane filtering. This has been taken off the list because lane filtering is allowed in Western Australia within certain limitations (surrounding traffic must be stationary, signalling is still required and must be done safely).

Here is the related regulation for overtaking. You will note that reg 122(1) stipulates a moving vehicle so when the vehicles are stationary that reg doesn’t apply.

122. Overtaking

      (1) When overtaking a moving vehicle, a driver of a vehicle (other than a bicycle) shall, except as provided in sub-regulations (2) and (3), pass to the right of that vehicle, at a safe distance.

Points: 2 Modified penalties: 2 PU

Petition for change to Australian Helment Standards

This petition could make a big difference to the safety standards, range and price of motorbike helmets in Australia.

The current laws and regulations conflict to the point that a rider can ride into another State and their helmet will be illegal. In some States it is impossible to buy a legal helmet as the required "stickers" are no longer produced.

This petition will urge the relevant Government departments to allow a consistent standard to apply at a national level. This would remove barriers to imported helmets and result in lower prices, a wider range of helmets and improved standards. It will also pave the way to accepting helmets meeting rigorous international standards.

Dear Delegates,

Our idea is not to film the content ourselves, but ask you to send us content. We then would do the editing. The overall length of the whole film after editing should not exceed five minutes. The film could then be used on Facebook, Youtube or on Club Webpages….

The goal is to show how strong and international the BMW Car and Motorcycle Clubs are. This will helps us to improve the awareness for the Clubs (also within BMW).

Please send us:

Group purchase Tool Box causing potential failure of rear brake

Just got back in from the Mt Augustus to Paraburdoo stage of the Desert Raid 2013. Had to return home as when the rear suspension bottomed out along the Pigandy Road, the tool box smashed a section of the rear brake caliper off. The brake pipe fitting has taken a big hit too. The tool box has a large dent in the bottom. A whole bunch of us did a group purchase of these things. Obviously not many of us are using our GS's to the full :)

This tool box was supposed to be designed for the GSA by an adventure rider. Not what you would call 'fit-for-purpose'. I now seem to recall Digger mentioning that his tool box broke off the rear brake bleeder.

Again obviously, this could lead to brake failure, not what is desired in remote Western Australia. I will post pictures on my ride report.

Rear Brake Disk Carrier Failures

A number of failures of the rear disk carrier on R1200GS, GSA and HP2 Motorcycles have been reported by club members and mechanics in WA. There is also an extensive thread on Adventure riders that details numerous disk carrier failures worldwide.
ADV Rider Topic 12GS Disk Flange Cracks

Another article on the subject is here at Motorcycle Info Pages

Within our club 2 members (now 3) have recently reported a disk carrier failure, one of them narrowly avoided serious injury when his rear disk broke away from the carrier and locked up the rear wheel.

One former member has noted that he thinks this should be a matter of safety recall from the manufacturer but so far this has not happened. So they have reported the problem to recall Australia but have been told that they need more complaints before they can take action.

If you ride one of these bikes you are strongly encouraged to check your motorcycle for evidence of cracks in the rear carrier. This is a 10 minute job but requires the removal of the rear wheel. See the posting in the club technical forum on how to do this. If you find a problem please take the time to report it with photos to Recall Australia so that we can prompt them to follow this up.

To contact recall Australia, send and email to

Below are some pictures showing evidence of the problem. Note later bikes have a steel carrier fitted and may not be subject to this problem. Certainly most problems seem to be on the earlier 04,05 models

BMW Instrument Repair in Perth

I have just had 2 R80G/S analogue speedo's refurbished by a Perth company in Canning Vale. They did a complete overhaul replaced worn parts (yes they have a source for instrument parts), calibrated, cleaned and painted the speedo's for me. The cost was $120 per Speedo. They also work on the K instruments and VDO gauges etc. The business is managed by Jeff who I thought provided a friendly and efficient service, see the links page under members links for their contact information

In a 90 year celebration of BMW motorrad and 40 years of the BMW R 90 S, the german manufacturer has joined forces with american expert custom bike
builder and 250GP national champion road racer roland sands to create the 'BMW concept ninety'. presented at the concorso d’eleganza villa d’este 2013
in lago como, the concept ninety revisits 1973 - a time when the R 90 S one of the fastest production bikes of its day entered production - resurrecting the
spirit of the emotionally charged superbike with a harmonious unison of man and machine. working back and forth from the BMW design headquarters
in munich and sands' workshop in long beach california, the collaborative venture brings to life a full-bred runner with a 900 cc air-cooled flat-twin boxer
engine boasting upwards to 115 horsepower. hand crafted from aluminum, the concept ninety weighs just under 190kg, where the upper ergonomic and
aerodynamic bodywork is visually separated from the black engine and chassis.

How to get the best out of your ESA Suspension

ESA makes suspension settings simple to understand and quick and easy to change. ESA:

is an option on many BMW models and most late model R1200GS's

displays the current settings on the info flatscreen

is easy to use - just press the ESA button

is very intuitive - you should only need to be shown how to use it once

makes it possible while riding to adjust suspension in two ways:

Preload - can only be adjusted while stationary with the engine idling such as while at traffic lights. *

Damping - can be adjusted while riding.

But just what settings suit you!, read the ESA article on the Usefull Links page to learn more
Club Photo's

Thanks to all the members who regularly take pictures and send them in to the committee. With the advent of better camera's the file size of photo's is going up and up. Ideally for use on the website we only need screen resolution sizes ie around 250Kb. Where ever possible please submit your photo's in this form and not as 3-6Mb files. That way we can publish them quickly without having to re-size them. You may find an easy way of doing this is to email your photos to us, if you use Outlook it will ask you if you want to re-size your photo's for email.

Thanks
The 2012 Camp Cook Off

This is the 4th year of the Annual Camp Cook-off but it was the first I have attended. 24 members, partners, family and friends attended the camp at Kokerbin Hill between Quairading and Bruce Rock. What a great event it was! I know it's an old cliche "you had to be there", but I reckon its true. There was great camaraderie, outrageous sledging (Ken), amazing cooking skills and some outright theatrics (JP!)

The night was chilly so a big camp fire was in order with Travis ferrying vast quantities of wood in to keep the fire going all night.

There were the usual posers!

Arriving early to scope out the competition.

It was great to see so many entries and such a variety of dishes.

The judges certainly didn't go wanting for dinner on the night.

In fact a few of the spectators didn't go wanting either as they followed the judges around with their own cutlery sampling the left overs!

This year most came by road, but JP reminded us that the he came by dirt, how the heck he brought the TV and Caramel popcorn is another story!
but it was enough to win him a jacket. Though I think the judges might have awarded it just to shut him up!!

Many more pictures and details to come, the pictures are still coming in.

A big thanks to Toni and Anthony for their great work in making the event possible. Thanks to the Judges, ladies you did a great job. Thanks to all our sponsors who will be listed in a subsequent post, and thank you to all who attended and helped to make it a great evening.
Our Records Officer is going to set about compiling a register of members favorite rides with the aim of building a knowledge base of great rides near and far from Perth that all members can access. To to this end we need routes, instructions, distances, details ...details and pictures would be good to!

We know that some of our members have an absolute wealth of knowledge, having lead us on some memorable excursions. It would be of enormous value to the rest of the members especially our new members if we could harness this and make it available to them. Of course we don't want all our favorite roads and camping spots becoming major tourist routes do we?, so this information is destined for the members only section of the website.

If you have any favorite rides or even great ride suggestions send some details into Dave at email records@bmwmccwa.asn.au or post them here Ride Suggestions This includes mid week rides, half day rides, full day, overnight, weekend or even multi day trips.

As Dave gets it all together you will be able to see and comment on the rides in the register here Members Ride Register you can even add a RSS feed so that you get emailed every time a new resource is added.

So get your thinking caps on and get those suggestions coming in..
Kart World Event

On Wednesday September the 5th, the club will be hosting a Monaco style Kart Racing evening at Kart World Belmont from 6:20pm to 10:15pm

Ric the Kart World Boss and one of our club members has very generously offered the club a huge discount on the event so that proceeds generated can be donated to the RFDS. This is a cause near and dear to many riders hearts and they have certainly helped out a few of our members in recent times.

Basically we are looking to attract 70 entrants for an evening of organized racing. Kart World will provide instructions, driving suits including helmets as well as snacks and soft drinks. Members, their friends, family and guests are all invited to attend, however a maximum of 70 drivers has been set. This way everyone will get a good amount of time behind the wheel.

Entry to drive will cost $60 and we plan/expect that 80% of this fee will go to the RFDS with 20% going to offset the cost of food and drink. If we reach our target of 70 drivers that means $3,360 for the RFDS new aeroplane fund.

Come along and help us reach our target, you will be supporting a worthy cause and you are bound to have a great night.

Prizes will be awarded for the best "performances".
